Hidden Hungary: Budapest, Cycling Discovery & Living Traditions in Őrség

A sustainable escape from the capital into nature, flavors, and traditional crafts

May 28–31, 2026 | 4 days / 3 nights

Step away from the familiar rhythms of Budapest and journey into one of Hungary’s most unspoiled regions. This carefully curated experience begins in the capital and continues into the heart of the Őrség National Park, where rolling meadows, quiet forests, and living village traditions still shape everyday life. This is not just a trip — it is an invitation to slow down and become part of the landscape.

Designed in the spirit of slow travel and sustainability, the program combines gentle outdoor activitieshands-on craft experiences, and authentic local gastronomy. Traveling by train, on foot, and by e-bike, we explore Hungary beyond the obvious — through family-run workshops, traditional crafts, small villages, and distinctive natural landscapes. Őrség offers a true “tasting menu” of folk culture and flavors, including pumpkin seed oil pressing, blacksmithing, dödölle, hand-stretched strudel, and other regional specialties.

Day 1 – Arrival in Budapest & Danube Magic

Our adventure begins in Hungary’s captivating capital. After arrival and a comfortable transfer to the hotel, we set out to explore Budapest on foot. A guided walk through the historic city centre introduces us to the elegant Danube Promenade, lively Váci Street, and iconic landmarks such as St. Stephen’s Basilica, framed by panoramic views toward Buda Castle and Gellért Hill.

As evening falls, Budapest reveals its most romantic face during a one-hour Danube River Cruise. Illuminated bridges, the Parliament building, and the Castle District create a spectacular backdrop as we glide along the river.

Dinner is enjoyed at a charming Budapest wine bar, offering a relaxed introduction to Hungarian flavors. Guests may choose to continue the evening discovering Budapest’s authentic local bar scene — intimate, atmospheric places where the city’s creative spirit comes alive.

Optional Evening Program – Budapest’s Real Bar Scene

Budapest’s underground bar culture reveals itself in places like Zsivágó, where vintage furniture and dim lighting make every conversation feel like a shared secret. From there, Macska’s mismatched charm and bohemian crowd pull you into a cozy chaos that feels instantly familiar. By the time you reach Cintányéros, with its quiet jazz and old-world atmosphere, it becomes clear that Budapest is not just a city of bars, but a tapestry of moods you drift through deep into the night.

Guided Walking Tour on the Land of Churches

In the afternoon, enjoy an easy, approximately two-hour guided walk in and around Őriszentpéter. The walk includes visits to a former medieval brick kiln, a nearby Árpád-era Catholic church, the old cemetery with its distinctive wooden grave markers, and the natural highlights of the Szala Valley. There is time to browse local ceramics and purchase handmade souvenirs.

Afternoon Excursion

After lunch, travel by private transfer to Magyarszombatfa to visit the Pottery House, one of the centers of traditional Őrség pottery. Continue to the Árpád-era church in Velemér — often called the “Church of Light” — renowned for its medieval frescoes, followed by the painted coffered Reformed church in Szentgyörgyvölgy.

Enjoy a coffee break exploring the landscapes of Southern Őrség and the Gerencsérek area. On the way back, stop in Magyarföld to visit a rare wooden church.

20:00 – Dinner

(Traditional Hungarian kettle-cooked stew (bogrács pörkölt), homemade strudel)

Bussay Wine Tasting – Six Wines at the Accommodation

This intimate wine tasting brings the spirit of Bussay Wine Cellar directly to our accommodation in Őriszentpéter. Known for its organic wines and strong sense of terroir, the Bussay family represents one of Hungary’s most distinctive winemaking traditions.

During the guided six-wine tasting, guests sample a carefully selected range of Bussay wines, showcasing indigenous grape varieties and the elegant, cool-climate character of the region. Each wine is introduced with insights into its origin, style, and philosophy, offering a deeper understanding of the connection between landscape and craftsmanship.

Day 3 – Exploring Őrség on Two Wheels

Breakfast

Breakfast features local specialties including eggplant spread, oven-baked bread, and homemade strudel. After breakfast, guests select their e-bikes and prepare for the day’s ride.

E-Bike Tour in Őrség National Park (Approx. 42 km)

A guided e-bike tour departs from Őriszentpéter, the “capital” of Őrség, heading into the diverse and enchanting eastern part of the region.

Our scenic route takes us through the charming villages and rolling landscapes of eastern Őrség: Őriszentpéter – Nagyrákos – Pankasz – Kisrákos – Viszák – Őrimagyarósd – Hegyhátszentjakab – Szaknyér – Ispánk – Őriszentpéter.

Along the way, we pause at Pankasz to admire the region’s famous “skirted” wooden bell tower, a remarkable example of traditional local architecture.

Lunch is served at a traditional countryside farmstead, where guests can savor the authentic flavors of the region. Following lunch, enjoy a demonstration of pumpkin seed oil production, a local specialty that has been crafted here for generations.

The tasting experience continues with a selection of regional delicacies: cold platters, freshly baked pastries, hand-stretched strudel, savory baked goods, homemade lemonades, and coffee — a perfect way to connect with the culinary heritage of Őrség.

Afternoon Relaxation

Free time at Lake Vadása, with opportunities to relax or enjoy a swim in a natural setting.

Dinner

A relaxed barbecue dinner at the accommodation, accompanied by a tasting of local Őri Bird craft beers.

Day 4 – Living Crafts and Departure
